Birth Doulas: Helping You Be Heard

With birth comes the unexpected, and creating a birth team that’s ready for everything is vital to support the ebbs and flows of your needs. One question our collective gets a lot is “who should be in the birth suite if I end up going to a hospital?” The dynamic Doula duo, Sacred Doula Collective - Sherri Doucette & Love Akana - see Doulas as providers of emotional support, physical comfort and an unwavering, objective resource to support those birthing to make the best, informed decisions.

As space keepers, nurturers and educators, it’s the Birth Doulas role to serve as  proverbial crossing guards for fast-moving providers. As if to say, “Slow down, take a breath - we’ve got this. You’ve entered the sacred space of an autonomous, empowered, educated and supported birthing person. Please engage accordingly.”

Why is this needed?

  • Many providers are trained within a fear-based system that medicalizes birth and distrusts the innate wisdom of birthing bodies. Therefore, it is crucial to have a Doula in the room as not only an advocate, but to embody and hold the tone for patience, kindness and courage.

  • The unpredictable nature of birth can sometimes require interventions, so having a Doula present to remind Birthers of their rights and responsibilities and the tenets of informed consent is crucial.

  • Birthers concerns or preferences can be dismissed as “overreacting or emotional” and so the support of a Doula can foster assertiveness and persistence

In fact, did you know that the presence of a doula reduces the likelihood of C-section by more than 50%?

Love & Sherri recognize the power of “mothering the mother”- making certain birthing persons in their care feel tended to, held and seen. Furthermore, they understand that manifesting the birth of your dreams more often than not depends upon the  intentional assembly of a compassionate collective of providers that share your values and vision.
